The Translation of the word "veritas" in latin means "truth". Hence, the MacTruth. Our goal for MacVeritas is to put up facts, eliminate or reduce some of the fear uncertainty and doubt (FUD) that you may hear or see in other locations. Plus, we will have some fun as well, because after all, using a mac is fun, most of the time anyway. Listen in or send us an email with any Macintosh related comments, questions, suggestions or opinions to participate in the Macintosh podcast community.

- Could this ever happen to Apple?
- Is this lazyness for XP users brought on by fear of change
- Dell Vowed to keep shipping XP until 2012
(http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/04/21/dell.xp.until.2012/)

Apple changes Software Update GUI for Windows
( http://www.tuaw.com/2008/04/18/apple-changes-software-update-gui-for-windows/ )
- Apple has adjusted the way Software Update notifies Windows users or new software
- Now, instead of just showing optional software in the same column as updates, Apple has added a seconded column labeled "New Software"
- Is this necessary/warranted?
- Is Apple doing the right thing in eyes of PC users by doing this?

Apple files for universal iPhone instant messaging patent
Jupiter Research Analyst: Three Apple Myths in the Enterprise
( http://www.macobserver.com/article/2008/04/14.11.shtml )
- The first myth is that Macs are more expensive than PCs
- The second myth is that there is a lack of software for the Mac
- Finally, the Big Myth, is that the Apple architecture is based on proprietary protocols
- "In many cases, comparable Apple systems are priced similarly or in some cases are even cheaper than their competition," Mr. Gartenberg noted.
- The analyst noted that there is actually an abundance of business software now available for the Mac
- "While that was certainly true in the past, it is not an accurate portrayal of Apple today"
- "Today, Apple is one of the most standards driven operating systems you can purchase."
- Question for Declan, Is Apple becoming more widely accepted in Enterprise IT in your experience?

As usual, we are here to combat FUD with Facts, and answer questions that listeners may have on using their Macintosh. So sit tight and enjoy the show!

This week on the MacVeritas Weekly Podcast, we are going to discuss:

- Psystar releases OpenComputer (formerly Open Mac)
- Analyst reiterates: Apple will sell 45 million iPhones in 2009
- Apple releases Apple TV 2.0.1 update
- Apple says Time Machine over AirPort Disk is unsupported feature
- Walt Mossberg says Apple will release an iPhone in the next 60-days
- And Our Apple/Macintosh FUD of the week

It looks like it is going to be another great show, so sit back, relax, and letâs get into a "Macintosh State of Mind".

========================================

Word of the Week - Open - Psystar released an OpenComputer (formerly OpenMac) which is MacCompatible for $399. Should apple allow this sort of hardware to be made available to the public? Inexpensive, Mac compatible, easily modifyable.

MacVeritas.com News

Item 1 - iTunes feedback is always appreciated, we see the subscriber numbers increasing, so we know somebody is listening. If you get a chance, do a search on the iTunes store for the MacVeritas, find the podcast, and leave some positive feedback for us. We would greatly appreciate it.

Item 2 - As usual call 858.736.9025.

Item 3 - leave feedback at macveritas@gmail.com.

Item 4 - if you go to the website, you will see that we have updated the website with a new look and feel. Using Wordpress and a theme from RevolutionTheme.com. We love the new design, and hope you enjoy it! We have received some very positive feedback on it, but we still appreciate any feedback you give us. Thanks!

Open Topics

Psystar OpenComputer
(http://www.macobserver.com/article/2008/04/14.4.shtml )
- For your $399, you get:
- a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Processor
- 2GB of DDR2 667 memory
- Integrated Intel GMA 950 Graphics
- 20x DVD+/-R SATA drive that is Lightscribe-capable
- Four rear USB Ports.
- $155 for Leopard Preinstalled
- $50 for 2 - port firewire card
- macMini $599 offers a 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB memory, an 80GB hard drive, a FireWire port, all packed into a tiny case.
- HOWEVER It definitely defies the EULA for Mac OS X, which specifies that the purchaser of a legal copy of Leopard is entitled to install the operating system on an Apple-branded computer.
- How Long will Psystar be around?
- Should Apple sue them?
- Should apple Allow Other computer manufacturers to use their OS?
- Wouldn't that lead to the same compatibility problems current windows owners have?
- Does knock off mac hardware make Apple look bad, given their incredible efforts for industrial design and overall compatibility?

Apple begins widespread testing of Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update
(http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/04/15/apple_plants_two_more_mac_os_x_10_5_3_seeds.html )
- OS X 10.5.3 Build 9D10, 9D19 adn 9D20
- a pre-release copy of the software update featuring a focus list spanning some two dozen core components
- AddressBook, AppleScript, Audio, Back To My Mac, Dashboard, the Dock, DVD Player, Finder, Graphics, iCal, Mail, Portable Home Directories, Printing, Rosetta, Spaces, Spotlight, Time Machine, and VoiceOver
- listed 75 code corrections that have already been baked into this first external build, including two aimed at critical memory leaks within CoreAnimation and iCal.
- 10.5.0 released 26 Oct 2007
- 10.5.1 released 15 Nov 2007 (approx 3 weeks)
- 10.5.2 released 11 Feb 2008 (approx 3 months)
- 10.5.3 Been 2 months since 10.5.2
- Could see release of this update any time now

Analyst reiterates: Apple will sell 45 million iPhones in 2009
( http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/analyst_reiterates_apple_will_sell_45_million_iphones_in_2009/ )
- Gene Munster Piper Jaffray analyst
- In June 2007 predicted, three weeks before Apple even began selling the iPhone, that the company would be shipping them at the rate of 45 million a year by 2009
- Monday released a detailed report to clients in which he lays out the steps by which he expects Apple (AAPL) to hit his target â quadrupling 2008 sales
- By introducing a 3G iPhone within the next 3 to 6 months
- By offering a family of 2 to 3 iPhones â including lower-priced models selling for $200 to $300 â by Jan 2009 at the latest
- By entering new countries, effectively doubling the addressable market every year for the next two years.
- By adding new features, such as games (Tiger Woods Golf, played by swinging the iPhone?) and remote purchases (Starbucks lattes without the wait?) starting in June
- Seems like a large number considering last quarter RIM shipped a record 4.4 million smartphones at an average selling price of $348. The Canada-based company also realized a net gain of 2.18 million smartphone subscribers in the period, raising its total account base to more than 14 million BlackBerry customers
- Now Apple wants to sell 10-million phones in 2008 for a total of 14-million phones.
- 45 million seems like a lot, more than tripling the previous years sales!
- Any impact on the iPod? I think so!
Apple releases Apple TV 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 updates
( http://www.macworld.com/article/132768/2008/03/appletv.html )
- New Genres entry
- Sync podcasts to iTunes
- Plus for Progress - hit plus button to see the progress bar
- Skip when shuffling - enable the ability to skip a track while shuffling on AppleTV

Apple to webcast FY 08 First Quarter Results Conference Call on Tuesday, January 22
( http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/16112/ )
- Apple will provide live audio streaming of its FY 08 First Quarter Results Conference Call utilizing Apple's industry-leading QuickTime multimedia software on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, 2pm PST/5pm EST.
- The live audio webcast will be accessible through Apple's website at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/earningsq108/
- in q4 2007 Apple shipped 2,319,000 Macintosh computers, representing 44 percent unit growth and 47 percent revenue growth over the year-ago quarter.
- The Company sold 22,121,000 iPods during the quarter, representing five percent unit growth and 17 percent revenue growth over the year-ago quarter.
- Quarterly iPhoneâ sales were 2,315,000.
- Lets see how things go this quarter

Apple says Time Machine over AirPort Disk is unsupported feature
( http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/04/08/apple_says_time_machine_over_airport_disk_is_unsupported_feature.html )
- AirPort Disk, the functionality was once a highly touted feature of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
- But in the weeks leading up to the operating system's release last fall, Apple edited its website, removing all such references to the backup solution.
- March 19 2008 Apple posts combo update for AirPort, Time Machine
- Time Machine and AirPort Update 1.0 (10.9MB)
- include compatibility fixes for users hoping to use Time Machine backups with the recently introduced Time Capsule wireless router and its built-in hard drive
- It also includes AirPort wireless driver fixes
- The update is only available for systems running the client version of Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2 or later
- So why provide the update if they are not going to support it?
- I have used it on my wifes laptop as a time machine backup and have not seen any errors
- Seems to work just fine, although have not had to use it yet.
- This of course presents the likely possibility that Apple will once again disable the feature with a forthcoming update.

FUD of the Week - Why OS X costs twice as much as Windows
- There HAS to be sarcasm is this piece...
- 4 released updates to OS X (10.2, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 (10.1 was free update)
- At $129 a pop your loyal Mac user paid $516 for new OS releases. There is no âupgradeâ pricing for OS X.
- Over the same period the steadfast Windows user would have spent a paltry $219
- Less than 2 years after Tigers release, Steve Jobs, Appleâs CEO, announced that 67% of the 22 million Mac OS X users were using Tiger. Compare that to Vistaâs 15% penetration 14 months after announcement

Apple firmware update enables wireless Time Machine backup via Airport Extreme Base Station
( http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/apple_firmware_update_enables_wireless_time_machine_backup_via_airport_ext/ )
- With today's Time Machine and AirPort Updates v1.0, Apple Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard's Time Machine now supports USB hard drives attached to Apple Airport Extreme Base Stations
- an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) with an attached USB hard drive can now function with Time Machine and perform wireless backups just like Apple's Time Capsule
- After applying the Time Machine and AirPort Updates v1.0 and restarting, users should launch Airport Utility (Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility). This will prompt the user to apply the 7.3.1 Firmware Update for their Airport Extreme Base Station

Apple to offer unlimited music download plan on iTunes?
- If the Financial Time's report (subscription required) is to be believed, Apple could already be in talks with music majors so as to offer an unlimited music download plan on iTunes.
- The company could offer this plan with each iPod purchase at a premium price and will give access to iTunes' entire music library, the report says.
- Other Phones already offer this (Nokia -
http://uk.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUKL0418248320071204 )
- Does this make sense for Apple at this point?
- Is this necessary?

Seagate CEO doesnât foresee big future for solid state drives - From a Fortune.com report
( http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/seagate_ceo_doesnt_foresee_big_future_for_solid_state_drives/ )
9 http://bigtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/03/17/flash-vs-hard-drive-battle-heats-up/ )
- Seagate CEO Bill Watkins isnât too impressed with the MacBook Air and doesnât expect laptops with solid state drives (SSDs) to be very popular
- He thinks SSDs are just too expensive, and will be for a long time
- However, even if prices drop and SSDs take off, Samsung feels that SSD makers like Samsung and Intel are violating the companyâs patents
- Seagate and Western Digital, two of the major hard drive makers, have patents that deal with many of the ways a storage device communicates with a computer
- It stands to reason that sooner or later, Seagate will sueâparticularly if it looks like SSDs could become a real threat

Apple makes good on its promise to push Safari for Windows through iTunes
( http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1286 )
- As Apple committed it would do last summer, the company is pushing its Safari for Windows browser via its iTunes distribution mechanism.
- Is this a big deal?
- Even if Safari is NOT loaded on your PC, it offers Safari v3.1 to you anyway
- How would we feel if microsoft did this?
- As with any update offered by the Windows utility, the Safari 3.1 download can be declined by unchecking a box.

OS X turns VII - from Macworld.com
- March 24, 2001, Apple released OS X 10.0, code-named Cheetah
- When Apple released OS X in March 2001, Apple Stores didn't even exist yet; the first pair, in California and Virginia, wouldnât open their doors until two months later.
- Nobody lined up for 10.0âs release, as they did for more recent versions like Tiger and Leopard.
- The iPod was still in development and wouldnât be released until October of that year.
- The iPhone wasnât even a glimmer in Steve Jobsâs eye.
- Apple still relied on PowerPC chips from Motorola and IBM, and the most advanced of those ran at 733MHz on a G4 processor that was already getting a bit long in the tooth
- The G5 wouldnât appear for another two years.
- The retail version of OS X 10.0 went for $129 which just goes to show you that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
- What is the future for OS X v 11.0 etc, what do we want to see from a next generation Operating System?

- Macs accounting for a 14 percent unit share and 25 percent dollar share of all US-based PC retail sales
- At the same time, overall US PC retail shipments grew just 9 percent on a 5 percent increase in revenues
- Apple saw particular strength in notebook systems, which rose 64 percent in units and 67 percent in revenues, suggesting strong sell-through of the company's new MacBook Air
- 'Macbook Air sales appear to be additive to total sales, rather than replacing Macbook Pro sales
- Overall, the US retail segment combined for a 20 percent increase in notebook shipments on an 11 percent rise in revenues
- Originally filed back in October of 2006
- The remote, similar in appearance to second-generation iPod nano
- For example, program data for upcoming programs, e.g., for the next month, can be downloaded and stored on the remote control device
- Note: it would seem logical that this functionality could also be integrated directly into the iPhone or iPod touch
- the Apple TV device itself would feature a more advanced form of an on-screen programming guide akin to those found on today's digital cable boxes or TiVO DVR records
- Apple also included about a dozen tables showing the how the various inputs on the touch-based Apple remote would function differently depending on what content or navigational interface was displayed on the screen
( see article for other info)

Introduction

You are listening to the MacVeritas Weekly Podcast, Episode #13 for Jan 2 2008. MacVeritas is a proud member, and the cornerstone of the CraneStudio Podcast Network.

(MacVeritas Yell followed by Intro Music)

Hello and welcome to MacVeritas, I am Dan Crane, resident founder of MacVeritas, and every week I am joined by Damon Blackman, and Declan Fleming, two of my fellow Macheads. We are here to combat FUD with Facts, and answer questions that listeners may have on using their Macintosh. So sit tight and enjoy the show!

This week on the MacVeritas Weekly Podcast, we are going to have:

- Our Mac word of the Week
- Our Macintosh week in review (3 second pause)
- Rumors of the week
- List of the Week
- Declans Links
- This week in Apple history courtesy of AppleMatters.com

It looks like it is going to be another great show, so sit back, relax, and letâs get into a "Macintosh State of Mind".

========================================

Word of the Week

WORD - Beginning - It's a new year, 2008 has begun, we all have a new year to start making things better.

Any Mac/Tech Resolutions?

PC Mike

1. When I buy stuff for my computer, try to install them in a reasonable
timeframe instead of always thinking "I'll get to it". As of yesterday I had
a bigger hard drive, a new TV tuner card, a firewire card, and a MS Office
upgrade...all sitting on my shelf awaiting install (I installed the firewire
card and new drive today..lol)

2. Set up automated backups. Right now it's "when I think of it", and it's
a manual process. I want to install a RAID on my wireless network to keep
files and backups.

3. More kid-safe access. Logins, monitoring, content filters, etc. Now that
my kids are getting older I need to be more diligent about this

Declan

1. Backups - or more accurately, auditing of my current backup scheme. I moved from Eudora to Thunderbird at home, but hadn't switched my backup scheme to capture the new email content. Fixed this over break.

2. Clean up my digital picture storage structure. I've got about 10 years of pictures and scans in a very rough chronological folder hierarchy that includes web pages/thumbnails. I've since moved all of my web access to pictures to flickr, so it's time to clean up the 55G mess I've got down to the 44G of actual content. After messing around with automating this, on and off for the past 3 years, I broke down and hand copied the 300+ folders to new locations. It's all much cleaner now!

3. Add proper metadata to my pictures. This is going to be a multi year project. I'd like to get names, dates, locations, and descriptions added to the whole collection. All of the "born digital" images have decent timestamps, but the 2500 scanned images have no good timestamps. As part of the above storage work, I ingested all of the images into Aperture, but Aperture doesn't allow you to modify the EXIF date taken field! Major bug, if you ask me. Also - there's no great photography taxonomy that I like when I do add metadata. Should I just tag the images, ie "Declan Fleming" or do something more machine readable like name:"Declan Fleming"

4. Play the games and movies I buy. I also have a pile of media I've never touched. Add to this the retro problem in videogaming... Our newer consoles - Wii, DS, Xbox, can support older games from a variety of platforms. These games are cheap and good - there's just not enough time in the day!

5. Actually watch and return Netflix movies. It doesn't take 6 months to watch The Professional...

6. Destroy my old hard drives. For years, I was on a kick to buy new hard drives as they price per G went down. This has left me with a pile of very small drives with old My Documents folders just waiting to be exploited. I bought a sledge hammer last year, but never got around to the task...

7. Sell or donate all the tech stuff I have that I'd feel bad about throwing away. 21" CRTs, 19" CRTs, DVD players (another kick I was on)...

8. Start a web based business/social network. Because there just aren't enough!

Damon

1. Organize/clean up del.icio.us bookmarks/tags.

2. Complete mulitmedia gameroom for kids in spare bedroom. Buy 20 inch iMac to replace aging G4 QuickSilver.

3. Continue doing weekly backups of all machines in house using Time Machine.

4. Import old 8mm and Digital-8 tapes to DV iMovie. A project for my 12 year old daughter.

5. Buy a gadget to open up the plastic packaging that seems to entomb everything nowadays.

Dan

1. I resolve to do a better job backing up important files (SuperDuper/Time Machine).

2. I resolve to be more organized and reduce duplicates (check out WhatSize).

3. I resolve to do better job Podcasting (and get a real sponsor).

4. Try to save fund for MacWorld 2009 (hopefully see Lion OS X v10.6).

5. Get 3 people I now to buy macs who were previous PC owners/users.

6. Make Progress on learning to Program Better (check out RealBasic).

7. Be a more thoughtful Twitterer (also get 10 more people I know to twitter with me)

8. Be more active in the Mac Community.

9. Make using the computer less obtrusive to my family. I admit it, I spend more time on the computer than I should ( and I know I'm not alone).

10. Archive as many photos/movies as humanly possible for posterity (iMovie, learn Final Cut Express).

MacVeritas.com News

Item 1 - Call with Questions 858.736.9025

Item 2 - email us at macveritas@gmail.com, questions, suggestions, tips, tricks, problems, jokes, complaints, anything.

Item 3 - As usual, If you like the podcast, please leave feedback on iTunes, we would greatly appreciate it.

Item 4 - MP3 downloads - surprisingly there were some! it started out slow, but it looks like there is some demand for it. We will keep providing those for a while to see if there is a sustained demand. so if you like em, keep downloading them, otherwise, if you haven't yet, please check out the .AAC enhanced podcast, it has chapter markers and images in the podcast that you cant see otherwise.

We would greatly appreciate it.

Item 2 - As usual call 858.736.9025.
